School Description and Mission Statement

This section provides information about the school’s goals and programs.

This is the nineteenth year of the School Accountability Report Card that was established by Proposition 98, an initiative passed by California voters.  As you read the Report Card, you will gain a better understanding of Chavez as a school with a record for improvement, a faculty that is professionally skilled and personally committed to meeting the learning needs of students and a student body which is enthusiastic and motivated to perform well.

Cesar E. Chavez Science Magnet School, serving students in the northeast section of the district, offers an extended day program with a strong emphasis on science.  Students attend regular day core academic classes from 8:12 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. and extended day Magnet classes until 5:00 p.m.  As part of the District’s desegregation plan, Chavez School offers a school-within-a-school Magnet program designed to serve 500 students; half of which are minority students that come from other schools within the district and half from the Chavez attendance area.

Chavez School is one of the district’s identified sites for severely handicapped special day students with autism.

Chavez staff and students are proud of our motto, “Excellence in education is our goal . . . making it happen is our role,” as this motto captures what it takes to meet our goals and have exemplary performance and sustained student improvement.

Opportunities for Parental Involvement

This section provides information about opportunities for parents to become involved with school activities.

The school community is actively involved with school activities through the Chavez Booster Club and School Site Council.  Parents are invited to a conference with their child’s teacher for the first reporting period in November.  Test scores, report cards, grades and behavior are discussed.  We have a very high level of parent participation at these conferences.  Parents are also invited to attend all assemblies, programs and staff development days.  A monthly newsletter is sent home.

The Chavez Booster Club sponsors several fund-raising activities. A parent committee raises money for Camp K.E.E.P., student awards, field trips and various projects.  Parents support various programs including DARE graduation and the mandatory student uniform policy.

Parents are encouraged to volunteer at the school.  On any given day, you will see parents assisting children in the before school chess program, working in small groups with students, raising money for field trips, volunteering in the office, and assisting in the Magnet program.
