School Description and Mission Statement

This section provides information about the school’s goals and programs.

This is the nineteenth year of the School Accountability Report Card that was established by Proposition 98, an initiative passed by California voters in 1988.  As you read the Report Card you will gain a better understanding of Harding as a school with a record for improvement, a faculty that is professionally skilled and personally committed to meeting the learning needs of students, and a student body which is enthusiastic and motivated to perform well.

Harding School, built in 1959, is situated in the northeast part of the city.  The school was named for Ruth Clarke Harding to honor her many years of dedicated service in the District, both as a teacher and as a principal.

In order for Harding students to become contributing members of society, the Harding school community will provide quality instructional programs that will optimize each child’s sense of responsibility, independence, productivity and educational success.

Opportunities for Parental Involvement

This section provides information about opportunities for parents to become involved with school activities.

Harding’s parents were involved not only in classroom activities, School Site Council and English Learner School Advisory Committee, but in the Parent Club which generated funds for several school projects, including incentives and awards given throughout the year.  Parent participation was again outstanding in its support of our many programs, such as Back-to-School Night, Family Fun Night, Parent Education Sessions, the Harding Newsletter, Year Book, Staff and Volunteer Recognition, Scholastic Book Sales, Camp K.E.E.P., Track Meet and Jog-a-Thon.  The Parent Club was also involved in ongoing planting and maintenance of the landscaping of planters around our school.

This tenth year of our Mandatory School Uniform policy went smoothly, with many parents donating new or slightly used uniform items for children in need.  Several community members (e.g. Chevron employees) and parents volunteered as Rolling Readers, while numerous Harding advocates served many hours as tutors under the direction of our certificated teacher tutor.  Our Reading Lab implements a phenomenal program of using community volunteers from the Community Reading Project.  These volunteers work with identified students under the direction of the Reading Lab teacher.
