School Description and Mission Statement

This section provides information about the school’s goals and programs.

This is the nineteenth year of the School Accountability Report Card that was established by Proposition 98, an initiative passed by California voters.  As you read the Report Card, you will gain a better understanding of Harris as a school with a record for improvement, a faculty that is professionally skilled and personally committed to meeting the learning needs of students and a student body which is enthusiastic and motivated to perform well.

Harris School was named in honor of Caroline Payne Harris for her many years of dedicated service as a teacher and longtime principal.  Harris School serves student in Kindergarten thru 5th grades.  The school is located on 9.7 acres at 4110 Garnsey Lane in Bakersfield.  Currently, the school has an enrollment approximately 420 students who come from middle to lower socioeconomic communities.  The school was built in 1960 and is 46 years old.

Our mission, as a school community, is to provide a safe learning environment to guide, nurture and challenge our students and ourselves to reach a high level of academic achievement as determinedby state and national standards.  Academic development and social responsibility will be our highest priorities.  We commit to a comprehensive system of support to assure their outcome.

Opportunities for Parental Involvement

This section provides information about opportunities for parents to become involved with school activities.

Staff, parents, and community members have many opportunities to work together throughout the year.  Parent involvement represents an important strategy in promoting student achievement, and in general parents have a positive view of Harris School.   Each year, “Back To School” night and parent conferences provide opportunities for parents to get to know the school and its academic programs.  The school hosts various “Family Nights” that help parents learn how they can support instruction at home.  In addition, several performances are scheduled throughout the year to showcase our students learning and appreciation for the arts.  Quarterly awards assemblies are scheduled to recognize parents and students for their academic achievement.
