School Description and Mission Statement

This section provides information about the school’s goals and programs.

This is the nineteenth year of the School Accountability Report Card that was established by proposition 98, an initiative passed by California voters.  As you read through this Report Card you will gain a better understanding of Jefferson as a school with a history of student achievement, a highly skilled staff that is determined to make a difference and a student body eager and motivated to learn in light of daily challenges.

Jefferson School is a small centrally located neighborhood school built in 1917 with approximately 500 students in attendance from Kindergarten through 5th grade.  With a high English Language Learner student population of approximately 40% Jefferson offers multiple English Language Immersion classes which focuses on a strong academic program in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and English Language Development.

Currently the mission statement reflects the school’s goals and establishes its overall direction.  “Our mission is to instill in our students a sense of ownership of their own learning and to guide and challenge the pursuit of that learning such that students achieve to their maximum potential and become productive citizens.”

We maintain that our school demonstrates a positive regard for all students, staff and community.  We strongly believe that our students have the right to “dream” about their future, “believe” in their personal abilities, and consequently through collaborative support they will be able to “achieve” their lifelong goals.  Finally we believe that teamwork involving all stakeholders is vital to student achievement and personal success.

Opportunities for Parental Involvement

This section provides information about opportunities for parents to become involved with school activities.

The family and community are an essential piece in helping support the students at Jefferson Elementary.  Jefferson offers parent education opportunities such as monthly Parent Workshops and other services needed in the home to help parents support and enhance students’ learning.  In addition, parents are actively involved with school activities through the School Site Council, English Learner Advisory Committee, School Advisory Committee, PTA, participation in Back-to-School Night, parent teacher conference, presented by the teachers, and our volunteer program.

Jefferson School is extremely proud of the number of parents and community members who volunteer time, contribute financial support, and make other donations.  Community involvement is encouraged through contacts with local businesses and student volunteers  to support teachers, and in the “Community Partners” program that invites community representatives to observe first hand the daily routine of a school site principal.
